UFC 274: Here’s a look at the UFC 274 results, which had a few star-studded fights on the card as well as who all received the bonuses
UFC 274 featured a fight between former champion Charles Oliveira, who was stripped of his belt because he missed weight, and Justin Gaethje who was still eligible to win the belt. The card also featured a strawweight title rematch between Rose Namajunas and Carla Esparza.
The main event was absolute fireworks, even though it did not go past the first round. In the odd three and a half minutes the fighters fought, they both got dropped twice, and it was just round the clock action you’d miss if you blinked. While Oliveira’s face look comparatively much more damaged owing to the big hook, and uppercut that Gaethje landed that dropped him, the American refused to engage in Olivera’s guard for the fear of his submission game. Up until Oliveria dropped Gaethje, immediately took side control in half mount, went from an armbar, to a twister and finished off by taking Gaethje’s back and sinking in a tight rear-naked choke. Even though he did not win the belt, he reminded the world that the championship throne has a name marked by ‘Do Bronx’.
With this victory, Oliveira improves his record of most finishes and most submissions inside the UFC octagon.
The co-main event between Rose Namajunas and Carla Esparza was an underwhelming and lacklustre affair. Both fighters hesitated to engage and there wasn’t even a single significant strike landed in the first three rounds. Rose circled Esparza for most of the fight, and had a good fifth round, while her opponent bagged some takedowns. It looked like Rose was hesitant because of the flashback of her first loss to Esparza, and it showed quite clearly in her half-hearted and irresolute display. Esparza herself didn’t pose any threat even with her takedowns. Rose sprung back up almost instantaneously every time Carla took her down. She managed to take Rose’s back a few times but failed to capitalize on it.
In the end Esparza won the fight by split decision and claimed the strawweight belt.
In other news, Michael Chandler delivered one of the greatest front leg kick to the face knockouts of all time, as he planted Tony Ferguson in the second round. Chandler overcame some adversity in the first round in which he got dropped by a stinging left hand, that also blurred his vision momentarily.
The main card saw a total of three spilt decisions. While the entire card certainly didn’t deliver, Tony Ferguson vs Michael Chandler, and Charles Oliveira vs Justin Gaethje gave fans the buck for the bang. Following the victory, Chandler delivered one of the most iconic callouts in UFC history, aimed toward Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje and Conor McGregor.
