In the final week of May, the UFC APEX will host one final event before taking a week off to rest up for the busy summer schedule.

This Saturday’s card should be entertaining, featuring a variety of competitive pairings and promising names to track, and headlined by an intriguing clash of styles between ranked straw weights Mackenzie Dern and Angela Hill, before things heat up again in the Octagon in June and July.

Mackenzie Dern vs Angela Hill poster

This main event matchup between Mackenzie Dern and Angela Hill to kick off their respective 2023 campaigns could shed a lot of light on where both women currently stand in the strawweight division.

After a strong start to her career that saw her win 11 of her first 12 bouts, Dern has lost two of her past three as she has struggled to find an effective method to use her dynamic grappling game. While she has improved on the feet, the Brazilian jiu jitsu great clearly shines when she initiates grappling sequences and tie-ups, when she has incredible control and the ability to strike from a variety of positions.

Hill arrives in Las Vegas hoping to build on her late-2017 triumphs against Loopy Godinez and Emily Ducote. In order to keep things standing against Dern on Saturday, “Overkill” will need to use her footwork and mobility, but she is still a consistent presence in the rankings and a durable, dangerous test for anyone in the category.

Edmen Shahbazyan and Anthony Hernandez, both middleweights and alumnis of Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS), meet in the Octagon for the co-main event, hoping to add to their respective previous victories.

After a year layoff and three consecutive defeats, Shahbazyan finally won a fight again in December at UFC 282, stopping Dalcha Lungiambula in the second round. A win tonight would put him squarely on the path back towards the rankings and, at 25, he still has plenty of time to recover the buzz that followed his 4-0 start in the UFC and 11-0 start to career.

Hernandez’s two of the first three fights in the Octagon ended in defeat, but he has now won three in a row, including spectacular submission victories. He started his 2023 campaign with a second-round submission victory against Marc-Andre Barriault and finished off multiple-time BJJ world champion Rodolfo Vieira through tapout. In between, he defeated Josh Fremd via unanimous decision at UFC 273.

While both Shahbazyan and Hernandez have shown promise at various points in their careers, it remains to be seen which of these two rising middleweight talents will be able to set the pace and leave the APEX with a victory on Saturday.

Emily Ducote and Loopy Godinez meet at a catchweight of 120 pounds on Saturday’s main programme after Ducote’s original opponent, Polyana Viana, was forced to withdraw earlier this month.

Former Invicta FC champion Ducote has split her first two appearances in the Octagon, defeating Jessica Penne in her debut before falling to Hill in December. She has faced quality competition throughout her career, and if she applies the lessons learned from her defeat to one of this weekend’s headliners, she should be able to return to victory quickly.

Godinez’s replacement of Viana should not come as a surprise, as the Mexican-Canadian has been one of the most active combatants since joining the UFC. She has also shared the Octagon with Penne and Hill, losing to both, but arrives in Las Vegas after defeating Cynthia Calvillo by split decision.

It will be interesting to see if either or both of the women decide to add more grappling to their striking-heavy game plans of late.

Each of Andre Fialho’s four subsequent bouts have concluded inside the distance, with the first two ending with his arm raised in victory and the most recent two with him tasting bitter defeat. After an extremely active 2022 season, he makes his first start of 2023 here in an attempt to return to the winners’ circle.

Meanwhile, Joaquin Buckley makes his UFC welterweight division debut in the midst of a two-fight skid, having been knocked out by Chris Curtis most recently at UFC 282. It will be intriguing to see how the St. Louis native’s dynamic offence in the middleweight division translates to the 170 pound division.

This fight will likely result in a knockout, and the process of determining who will be eliminated should be extremely entertaining for as long as it lasts.

In the opening bout of the main card, Diego Ferreira and Michael Johnson, both veteran lightweights coming from distinct directions, square off.

A former fixture in the Top 15, Ferreira returns to Las Vegas with a three-fight losing streak, having not competed since losing to Mateusz Gamrot at the end of 2021. It is not impossible for the Fortis MMA representative to return to the form that led to victories over Anthony Pettis, Jared Gordon, and Olivier Aubin-Mercier in the past, as each of his recent defeats have come against exceptional opponents.

Johnson defeated Marc Diakiese by unanimous decision in his most recent bout, and he has won two of his last three bouts. One could argue that he deserved the victory in his split decision loss to Jamie Mullarkey. “The Menace” has faced one of the most difficult schedules of anyone on the active roster, and he continues that trend here.
