John Kavanagh was called out for wanting Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier to be for the title
Irish martial arts coach John Kavanagh thinks that Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier 2 should be for the UFC Lightweight belt.
McGregor is scheduled to face former interim champion Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 in a rematch of their 2014 bout, which the Notorious One won by TKO.
And now, his trainer John Kavanagh says that he fails to understand why the main event at UFC 257 isn’t for the belt. Khabib Nurmagomedov has been untouchable ever since he won the belt in April 2018.
McGregor failed to win back the belt against Khabib at UFC 229. The Russian then went on to defend the belt two more times, until he retired in October 2020.
Abdelaziz and Dan Ige take shots at talks of McGregor vs Poirier being for the title
Ali Abdelaziz, Khabib’s agent, says that the winner of the UFC 257 main event would have a shot at the title. Along with that, he went on to take a brutal jab at Kavanagh.
Here, he refers to McGregor losing via submission at UFC 229 and his corner being attacked after the bell.
UFC featherweight fight Dan Ige was next in line to have a pop at the Irish trainer. Quoting the tweet, 50k wrote that the reason for the fight not being for the title is simple; it’s because Nurmagomedov is the reigning champion.
As it stands, the fight will not be for the lightweight title and it looks like staying that way. However, there is a big chance that the winner of the bout is next in line for the title.
Nurmagomedov has been touted to make a possible return to fight either McGregor or Georges St-Pierre. However, they remain rumours at this point with this tweet from Abdelaziz being the closest official clue we have of The Eagle’s return at the point.
