Henry Cejudo wanted to fight Alexander Volkanovski before he retired from the UFC
Alexander Volkanovski was one of the guests on Ariel Helwani’s latest MMA show.
The Featherweight Champion has a rematch against former title-holder Max Holloway at UFC 251. However, Volkanovski spoke about the possibility of fighting Henry Cejudo.
The former Bantamweight star retired from the UFC after defeating Dominick Cruz, but recently spoke about possibly returning to fight Volkanovski for the featherweight title.
The Australian claimed he was open to fighting Cejudo when he was in the UFC. He also praised Triple C for all that he had done for the Bantamweight division, however, he was seeing him as a contender for the title when he spoke of taking him on.
Helwani then pressed if it was right for Cejudo to possibly face Volkanovski and jump the queue ahead of other fighters, and that was the reason why Volkanovski didn’t think Cejudo would get a shot.
“If he did have a chance it was before, now that these fights are happening, I don’t think there would be seen.”
Volkanovski added that the Flyweight division has several top fights who would be facing each other.
“All the contenders, all the guys who are right up there are fighting each other. Straight after this fight, there are going to be guys after this belt.”
This is expected to find the next challenger for the champion if he keeps the title.
Cejudo calls out Volkanovski again
Right after Volkanovski appeared on the podcast, Cejudo tweeted he would be coming for the champ’s gold.
Cejudo, however, added that he would also bet a lot of his valuables, including his Olympic Gold Medal, that Volkanovski would not last even two rounds against Triple C.
It will be interesting to see what Cejudo does next given that he is appearing on AEW. He has also spoken about wanting to box.
Volkanovski, for his part, has a tough clash against Holloway next. He beat Holloway to win the title at UFC 245 and UFC 251 sees an intriguing clash between the two Flyweights.
