Patricio Freire is the current Bellator Lightweight champion and claimed he was the best, something that Alexander Volkanovski didn’t agree with
UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski took offence to some comments made from Patricio Freire recently.
Freire is the current Bellator Featherweight champion and was coming off a win over Pedro Calvalho at Bellator 252.
The Brazilian has a record of 31 wins and four losses and has won both the Lightweight and Featherweight titles in the promotion.
Bellator’s Steve Coker also agreed with the statement from the Brazilian but Volkanovski wasn’t having any of it.
The Australian is the current champion and believed he could easily take out the Bellator star too.
Volkanovski defeated Max Holloway to win the title and then defeated his rival to retain it recently. The Australian has wins over stalwarts such as Jose Aldo too and only has one loss in his MMA career.
Bellator and UFC are two of the biggest MMA promotions in the world. However, cross-promotion fights do not happen simply because too much is at stake.
Fighters from both promotions have spoken about taking on their counterparts from the other side but it is unlikely these things will ever be placed.
Champion vs Champion clashes would bring in a ton of money for both promotions and there would be bragging rights up for grabs too.
While Volkanovski has an incredible record in his MMA career, his Bellator counterpart isn’t all that bad. Freire is on a six-fight win streak and his last loss came in 2016 against Benson Henderson.
It is difficult to say who is the best Featherweight on the planet and the only way to decide that would be a battle between Volkanovski and Freire.
