Alexander Volkov is looking to fight the dangerous Francis Ngannou next
Alexander Volkov has been on an impressive upward surge in the UFC’s heavyweight division.
The 6 foot 7 Russian is currently ranked number 5 in the heavyweight division and is currently on a two-fight win streak with knockout wins over Walt Harris and Alistair Overeem.
In a recent interview with South China Morning Post, Volkov spoke about his ambitions of a fight against UFC heavyweight champ Francis Ngannou next, for the title.
He was quoted as saying (via. his translator):
“I think we have a great history to promote the fight. But the main reason I want to face him is not because who he is, it is because he holds the belt.”
The history Volkov is referring to here is the social media jibes the pair have traded since 2017.
During a Q&A (in 2017), back when both Ngannou and Volkov were relatively new to the UFC, Volkov stated that Ngannou was very selective, and would fight him only if he gets the HW belt.
And, 2 years later, in December 2019, the pair had another back and forth on Twitter.
Volkov takes on Ciryl Gane this weekend in a clash of the top-ranked heavyweights. The pair are set to headline this weekend’s UFC Vegas 30.
Gane is currently ranked number 3 in the heavyweight division, and has never tasted defeat in his UFC career. He is coming off a win over the dangerous ‘Bigi Boy’ Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
It is worth noting that the Frenchman has trained with Francis Ngannou during their time at MMA Factory.
