Nate Diaz vs Leon Edwards was postponed ahead of UFC 262 and Ali Abdelaziz called out Colby Covington
UFC 262 had a title fight as Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira were to meet for the vacant Lightweight title.
However, all the eyes were also on the co-main event as Leon Edwards took on Nate Diaz. This was to be Diaz’s first fight since losing to Jorge Masvidal for the BMF title a couple of years back.
The UFC also upped the stakes in this fight as this co-main was going to be five-rounds instead of the regular three.
However, the stars don’t seem aligned, for now. The fight has been postponed by a month or so after Diaz picked up a minor injury.
That leaves Edwards without a rival and it is more than likely, he will wait for Diaz to get healed and take him on.
However, this also opens the door for someone else to take up the fight. Ali Abdelaziz, the manager of UFC Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, called out Colby Covington.
Covington has been keen on a rematch with Usman after the champion defeated Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261.
Who is to fight Kamaru Usman next?
Covington was in the audience when Masvidal got knocked out by Usman and spoke that he is the next to get a title shot.
However, Usman seems to be backing down from a fight and Abdelaziz recently claimed that Covington had done nothing to get another title shot.
The manager also brought up Michael Chiesa and claimed that he could get a title shot since he had a decent winning streak in the welterweight division.
This could all just be a ploy from Usman and Abdelaziz to get more attention to this fight. Usman is keen on fighting again this year and tried to shut down a rematch with Masvidal before eventually accepting it.
The Covington fight makes sense since there is no one else really in the division who could take Usman on. Of course, there is Stephen Thompson and he has called out the champion recently as well.
