Talks of a Khabib Nurmagomedov-Floyd Mayweather fight have been rife, ever since the Russian beat Conor McGregor at UFC 229
Khabib Nurmagomedov is one of the most popular faces of modern MMA. He might probably be second only to Conor McGregor in terms of money and fame.
‘The Eagle of Dagestan’ recently announced that he has officially retired from the sport of MMA. The official confirmation came five month after he hung up his gloves at UFC 254, in October 2020.
Khabib divulged at the post-fight interview that he wouldn’t be able to continue without his late father by the ringside. He had also promised his mother that, the Justin Gaethje fight at UFC 254, would be his last fight.
However, following UFC 254, there were a lot of talks of Khabib returning to the UFC, to fight Georges St-Pierre. There were speculations of Khabib taking on various other combat sports athletes too.
People failed to see the big-picture. They didn’t realize how much, a man of his word, Khabib was.
And one such offer was a $100 million deal to fight the legendary Floyd Mayweather. And guess what? Khabib turned this down without hesitation.
An amazed Ali Abdelaziz told Mike Tyson in Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson:
“Khabib got offered $100 million after he’s retired to fight Floyd Mayweather. $100 million!…You can ask Floyd, you can ask everybody, and Khabib said, ‘No. I’m retired. I told my mother I’m retired. I’m gonna keep my word to my mother. If my mother told me to fight again, maybe I will. But right now, she told me not to fight.’” [via BloodyElbow]
Everybody wants a piece of Khabib Nurmagomedov
In the same interview with Mike Tyson, Abdelaziz revealed another interesting offer Khabib had received. It was from none other than Georges St-Pierre.
Abdelaziz said that White had called him and explained that GSP was willing to take on Khabib in a non-title fight at 165 pounds.
The Dominance MMA CEO was quoted as saying:
“Ten days ago, Dana White called me. And he said, ‘Georges St-Pierre, he said he will fight Khabib. Non-title fight, 165 pounds.’ But in a way, we’ve been waiting for Georges… I like Georges. He’s my friend.”
