Kamaru Usman will have to defend his welterweight title yet another time in his next fight
It looks like Kamaru Usman is running out of options for his next fight. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has eased past almost every opponent he has faced inside the Octagon.
Usman recently faced Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261. He beat ‘Gamebred’ via. knockout to hand him his first knockout loss in the UFC.
The welterweight champ has already beaten the likes of top fighters like Colby Covington, Gilbert Burns, Tyron Woodley, Rafael dos Anjos and many others.
However, he will still have to keep defending his title unless he decides to retire or move to another division.
Usman’s manager Ali Abdelaziz recently put out a Tweet stating that Usman would fight Nate Diaz over Colby Covington “all day”.
His tweet read: “Nate Diaz over Colby all day.”
Diaz recently made his return to the Octagon after almost two years. He faced Leon Edwards and almost finished him in the last minute of the fight, after being dominated for the rest of the time.
Kamaru Usman fought Colby Covington at UFC 245
Usman and Covington fought at UFC 245 (December 2019), in what is considered to be one of the greatest welterweight matches of all time.
The ‘bloodbath fight’ saw both the fighters go hammer and tongs, before Usman finished Covington by breaking ‘The Chaos’ jaw towards the very end of the fifth round.
Covington wasn’t knocked out cold, the referee had to wave off the fight since his jaw was broken and he did nothing to defend himself. That was enough for Covington to call out Usman for a rematch, which he has been doing until today.
Usman, on the other hand, hasn’t felt the need to take on Covington in a rematch because he finished him that night.
But, Covington is still the number 1 ranked welterweight contender and a rematch between the two is by all means inevitable.
