Yoel Romero is out of one of the most anticipated fights in Bellator history due to a failed medical screening
Romero who was recently released by the UFC, was roped in by Bellator MMA in no time.
He was set to make his debut against former UFC light-heavyweight Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson in the first round of the Bellator Light Heavyweight World Grand Prix, on May 7 at Bellator 258.
But, on failing to clear medical screening, Romero is out of the fight against Johnson. Bellator later issued a statement that Romero would be eligible to reapply in a few months time and that they were looking forward to seeing him make his debut.
The news comes as a huge disappointment to those who were wanting to see the fight, since it was also between two veterans who carved a name for themselves in the world’s biggest MMA promotion- UFC.
It was also learnt that Anthony Johnson will be facing a replacement fighter in the first round of the Bellator Light Heavyweight World Grand Prix.
Elsewhere, UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling took to Twitter to react to the news of Romero having to pull out.
Sterling quote tweeted a Marc Raimondi tweet which said, “Yoel Romero fails medical screening, out of Bellator fight with “Rumble” Johnson, tournament.”
A flummoxed Sterling tweeted that he had no idea what that meant.
Aljamain Sterling and Henry Cejudo go back and forth on Twitter
Aljamain Sterling won the bantamweight title against Petr Yan at UFC 259 in a freak way. Yan the defending champion kneed a grounded Sterling, which is deemed illegal in the UFC, and was disqualified.
Sterling thereby became the first fighter in UFC history to win a championship belt due to a disqualification. However, the Funk Master was heavily criticized by a plethora of fighters and fans for overplaying Yan’s knee.
‘Triple C’ Henry Cejudo was one among them. Cejudo and Sterling have been going at it since then, and recently Cejudo called Sterling a wiener after the Funk Master hit back at Cejudo for trolling him with a with a GIF from the fight at UFC 259.
Sterling warned Cejudo that he would school him once his injury is cleared. Cejudo replied, “Exactly you don’t deserve that extra letter. You Wiener.”
Cejudo has retired from the sport of mixed martial arts, and he even got his name removed from the USADA testing pool recently.
