Amanda Nunes recently tested positive for COVID-19 and hence the women’s bantamweight title bout at UFC 265 had to be called off
Amanda Nunes was scheduled to take on Julianna Pena in the co-main event of UFC 265. The fight which would have taken place on the 7th of August was pulled off from the card since Nunes tested positive for coronavirus.
The news was first reported by Mike Coppinger of ESPN who had learned the same from UFC ‘s chief business officer Hunter Campbell.
It was also reported that the fight would be rescheduled once ‘The Lioness’ is fit and ready to go. UFC 265 is headlined by an interim heavyweight title fight between Derrick Lewis and Cyril Gane.
ESPN MMA’s tweet read:
“Amanda Nunes tested positive for COVID, canceling her fight against Julianna Peña that was scheduled for #UFC265, UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell told @MikeCoppinger. Campbell said the plan is to reschedule the bout when Nunes is fully healthy and ready to compete.”
Amanda Nunes then released a statement on Twitter following her positive COVID test. The two-division champ revealed that she was more than ready for the fight, but caught the ‘vid’ unfortunately.
Nunes wrote:
“We were more than ready for this fight, unfortunately sh*t happens. Stay tuned for a new date.”
Jose Aldo vs Pedro Munhoz who were supposed to face off in the main card of UFC 265, will now be co-headlining the event. Aaron Bronsteter of TSN reported the same.
He tweeted:
“Per the UFC, Jose Aldo vs. Pedro Munhoz will be the new co-main event for UFC 265, replacing Amanda Nunes vs. Julianna Pena, which has been postponed.”
Bronsteter then confirmed that the fight will be held for three rounds.
“Fight will be scheduled for three rounds for those asking.”
Jose Aldo is coming off a unanimous decision win over Marlon Vera on the 19th of December, 2020. Munhoz on the other hand, is coming off a unanimous decision win over Jimmie Rivera at UFC Fight Night: Rozenstruik vs Gane, earlier this year.
