Bas Rutten wants Conor McGregor to correct stance after Dustin Poirier’s calf kick destruction

Conor McGregor had his stance to blame for humiliating UFC 257 loss

Dustin Poirier massacred Conor McGregor’s legs during their UFC 257 bout. That is something which everyone knows by now.

‘The Diamond’ wore out the ‘The Notorious One’ with one calf kick after the other, until he had the opportunity to drop him to the mat.

When the punch connected, his legs gave in. And MMA legend Bas Rutten, who was with The Schmo on YouTube this week, pointed out how McGregor’s stance made him susceptible to defeat.

“The stance that he [McGregor] has, he cannot move forward and backwards fast enough and he can’t check them because he is completely toward the inside. And bada-bing bada-boom, Poirier did it.”

Rutten even said how he would have made Jose Aldo change to southpaw 6 months before his fight with the Irishman and attack McGregor’s legs because his stance would have allowed the Brazilian to do so.

“He needs to adapt to a little bit more of a square stance, and what I would do and put his legs a little closer to each other because then it’s easier to move forward and backwards, and to the sides, of course as well.

“The blueprint is out now and everybody knows ‘oh, you’re fighting McGregor, that’s going to be low kicks’, so McGregor’s got to adapt, he has got to change his style, but he needs to stand more square… it’s very hard to get low kicks.”

Now that’s some great free advice from one of the best to ever do it. UFC fighters stay at the top of their game over the years by adapting, modifying, and changing their styles whenever necessary.

The same stance and the same approach is not going to work on every opponent, especially if the guy next to you is already aware of your blueprint.

McGregor would be more than aware of this for the trilogy fight against Poirier for sure.
