Ben Askren predicts Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier trilogy and also questions McGregor’s training ahead of the fight
Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier 3 is just one step away from being a reality. The rematch has been in the works ever since the UFC 257 main event finished.
And now, UFC president, Dana White, even mentioned July as a potential date on the fight. Predictions have been flowing in ever since the probability of a trilogy fight came into being.
Speaking to Helen Yee on her YouTube channel, former Bellator and UFC fighter, Ben Askren, became the latest to have his say on the fight.
And he says that he sees a clear victory for ‘The Diamond’, who comfortably beat ‘The Notorious One’ at UFC 257.
“Gotta think so, right? [Dustin beating Conor]. Probably… I just think he was so convincing and… it’s happened not just with him but many other athletes; when they make the amount of money he made and they get the amount of fame he’s had, it’s f****** hard to go train like a mad man… If you have a $100million or whatever it is in the bank, and then you know, you see him on his private yachts, it’s like, man it’s gonna be hard for him to want to train hard.”
What does Conor McGregor have to do in training to win the trilogy fight?
This is not the first time that someone is questioning McGregor’s work ethic because of his fame and success recently, and it certainly won’t be the last.
UFC president Dana White thought so too and asked if the Irishman had the right mentality going into UFC 257.
But that is something that is part and parcel of the game. They have seen McGregor dominate so much that anything less makes people think that he is losing his touch.
There were, however, holes in his game the last time around. So in the trilogy fight, he would have to really work on checking Poirier’s leg kicks, which is something that Bas Rutten has advised him to do by changing his stance.
And moreover, Chael Sonnen also added that while the physical aspect of the fight cannot change over such a small period, the mental aspects can. And if McGregor’s digs deep to find that mentality that got him at the pinnacle, then he has nothing to worry about.
