Conor McGregor is keen on winning the UFC Lightweight title after Khabib Nurmagomedov retired
Khabib Nurmagomedov retiring from the UFC has opened up the Lightweight division with many stars, including Conor McGregor, keen on winning the title.
The Russian retired from MMA with a 29-0 record and was the Lightweight champion. Dana White tried to get Khabib back into the game but The Eagle had enough and posted an emotional message confirming his retirement.
The next big talk was who would get a shot at the title? There were many stars vying to grab the gold and White made a big call.
The UFC president confirmed that Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler would meet at UFC 262 for the gold.
That left Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje and Conor McGregor out. Poirier and McGregor met at UFC 257 and it was the Irishman that lost.
However, McGregor posted an image of himself and claimed that he was the 155lb pound champion and wanted to get a fight too:
Poirier should have gotten a title shot after his win over McGregor. However, The Diamond was keen on fighting McGregor a third time.
This is a money fight and it will be interesting to see how it goes. McGregor was humbled at UFC 257 but he claimed he was going back to his roots.
Ariel Helwani also shared a possible date for the McGregor vs Poirier trilogy and that is going to take place in July.
That would be too late to crown a new champion and it will be interesting to see how Chandler vs Oliveira goes.
Chandler won his UFC debut fight while Oliveira is on an eight-fight winning streak. The winner of that fight could end up facing the winner of McGregor vs Poirier.
McGregor does need to re-look at his tactics to deal with Poirier. The Irishman has always bounced back from a defeat and this could happen when he faces The Diamond next.
