Kamaru Usman seems to be running out of options for his next fight
Usman is the reigning king of the welterweight division. He is still undefeated in the UFC, with 14 consecutive wins, all in the welterweight division.
His recent win against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 262, showed how dangerous ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ can be, as a striker as well.
Usman has hardly had any trouble seeing off his UFC opponents. But, there was one man who gave the Nigerian, a run for his money. It was Colby Covington at UFC 245.
In one of the most brutal fights in the history of the UFC, ‘Chaos’ came agonizingly close to defeating Usman, before succumbing to a late fifth-round TKO.
There have always been talks of a rematch between the two, ever since that night. However, Usman doesn’t seem to be interested, since he finished Covington that night, and also because he hasn’t done much in the UFC since UFC 245.
Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub feels that Covington still deserves a rematch against Usman. In an interview with the Schmo, Schaub revealed that Covington would still be the guy to bring out the best in Usman.
Schaub said:
“What has Colby done? Colby gave you your toughest fight. He was a round away from winning that damn thing [welterweight belt]. If you wanna see the champ defend his belt and be forced to the brink, and really bring out the best in the champ; Colby Covington is that guy man! I think Colby’s deserved it, I really do.
Kamaru Usman had a name in mind, when recently asked about how he would like to fight next. It was number 6 ranked welterweight Michael Chiesa.
In the same interview with the Schmo, Schaub stated that Chiesa had it in him to become the welterweight champion some day. He also considered him to be the dark horse in the WW division.
Schaub told the Schmo:
“He is reaching there. I love Michael Chiesa and he is my dark horse in that welterweight division…He could be a champ. But, not yet.”
