Jorge Masvidal will be without the services of his coach Mike Brown at UFC 251
UFC BMF Champion Jorge Masvidal will be without the services of his coach Mike Brown at UFC 251.
Masvidal is to face Kamaru Usman for the UFC Welterweight title at Fight Island this weekend. Covid-19 played a role in Gamebred getting his shot at the title. Usman, the champion, was to face Gilbert Burns but the Brazilian also tested positive for the virus and has to be replaced.
However, Brown, Masvidal’s long-time coach, tested positive for Covid-19 during some tests at Las Vegas. Brown, a former UFC star, also spoke about how disappointed he was as he couldn’t be Masvidal’s cornerman.
Masvidal should still be alright as other coaches should step up. However, some had a funny take on who Gamebred’s coach should be in all this.
Brian Kelleher, who stars in the Bantamweight division, shared a hilarious picture of Masvidal with his ‘girlfriend’ who also looked like him.
This was tongue-in-cheek humour related to what Mike Perry had done. Perry didn’t have a coach in the corner but instead brought in his girlfriend Latory Gonzalez.
That worked a treat for him as he won his most recently clash, and then had an almighty go at the IRS too.
Masvidal is one of the toughest fighters in the UFC and he could coach himself. However, having additional eyes and ears near the cage always helps.
Masvidal should be commended for taking the fight on such short notice. Gamebred is one of the toughest stars in the UFC and he accepted this clash with just seven days in hand.
This does put Masvidal in a tough position but if anyone can get the win it has to be Gamebred. He already has some incredible wins in his UFC career and defeating Usman would be something special too.
The pair were to meet before Usman vs Burns was set up, and this might be fate playing that has seen Masvidal get a title shot again.
