Jorge Masvidal lost to Kamaru Usman at UFC 251 but wants a rematch against the champion
UFC 251 was saved by Jorge Masvidal as he took a short-notice fight against the Welterweight Champion, Kamaru Usman.
Usman was to face Gilbert Burns but the Brazilian had to pull out after testing positive for Covid-19. Masvidal stepped up with just a few days before the fight and even made weight. Gamebred put on quite a show against Usman but ended up losing the fight thanks to a unanimous decision.
Masvidal has claimed that he wants a rematch and had picked up a lot of things from the loss. The UFC seems to be pushing Usman vs Burns again but Chael Sonnen backed Gamebred’s claims.
Gamebred didn’t even have a proper training camp for the fight and Sonnen was open to seeing Masvidal vs Usman 2:
“That’s and easy sell. You [Masvidal] are right. You put up one hell of a fight with a guy who was ready to fight.
“Regardless of the rounds won or who the championship left with, he is telling the truth.
“He is telling the truth that he deserves to get that again but with a proper training camp.”
UFC have other plans for Masvidal
However, the #4 ranked Welterweight in the world might end up facing a former teammate. Colby Covington defeated Tyron Woodley in incredible fashion in his last outing and wants another crack at Usman.
The pair had met in the past with Usman coming out on top and even breaking Covington’s jaw. The UFC is keen on setting up Masvidal vs Covington and that is something Dana White brought up too.
Masvidal is always a big draw and making him fight Covington would be a blockbuster event. Sonnen added that Masvidal vs Leon Edwards could also be a great fight and it will be interesting to see what is next for Gamebred.
However, Sonnen didn’t seem to think that Masvidal was aligning himself to fight the winner of Usman vs Burns.
