Chael Sonnen was confused about Henry Cejudo and his retirement
UFC legend Chael Sonnen had a bit of a go at Henry Cejudo and Triple C’s retirement.
The former Bantamweight champion shocked the world by announcing his retirement right after a win. Cejudo is considered as one of the best MMA stars ever, but he has sent mixed signals ever since.
Triple C has spoken about fighting for a belt in another division but his retirement ends all that. Sonnen was just confused about it all and shared his thoughts on the same:
“The most baffling retirement in mixed martial arts history continues to be Henry Cejudo. Henry is outdoing himself even in retirement.”
Sonnen added that Cejudo was in the conversation of being the best combat athlete of all-time. That was due to him holding two division belts at the same time and also being an Olympic wrestling champion.
However, the timing of Cejudo’s retirement after defeating Dominick Cruz in a title fight just didn’t sit right with him:
“For him to retire out of nowhere as a co-main event in an empty arena, it didn’t feel right.
“You couple that with the fact that he goes to the press conference right after 45 minutes later and says ‘you know, of course, I would fight again if they gave me more money’
“OK, I’ve seen this movie before alright? Same song, different verse, a little bit louder and a little bit worse.”
White playing his cards
The UFC legend went on to say that Dana White would play based on the cards dealt and it was up to Cejudo to change his tune.
White has recently claimed that Petr Yan and Jose Aldo would fight for the now vacant Bantamweight title. However, there was still scope for Cejudo to come out of retirement and negotiate a new deal of sorts.
Sonnen also was confused regarding the future of Cejudo. Triple C wants to get into the boxing ring and has been training with Mike Tyson.
He has also appeared on AEW while calling out Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway for a title shot too.
“I’m confused, Henry”, continued Sonnen.
“Are we done? Are we not done? A fellow guy who has retired. I have barely broken a sweat and a few sweats I have broken have not been sparring in MMA.
“There’s other things to do if you are looking to get your heart-rate up, I am just confused, it’s just flat out confusing.”
Sonnen claimed that Cejudo could still return to the world of MMA and fight for titles in a couple of years. However, he just wanted to know what was going on in Triple C’s mind.
