Chael Sonnen reacted to the lopsided jury decision in favor of Johnny Depp in his defamation case against Amber Heard

The biggest non-fictional television drama has finally come to closing on Wednesday. The jury awarded Johnny Depp more than $10 million in his libel lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard, exculpating his stance that Heard fabricated claims that she was abused by Depp.

Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages after jurors concluded she proved defamation on one count in a counterclaim against Depp for statements made by his former lawyer Adam Waldman who said the actress was staging an “abuse hoax.”

Hollywood superstar Johny Depp sued Heard for $50 million over an op-ed she wrote in 2018, claiming it damaged his career. Heard did not name Depp in the article, entitled, “I spoke up against sexual violence—and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.” Depp’s lawyers countered by saying it was definitely directed towards him.

Amber Heard issued a statement following the verdict on Instagram stating that Depp’s power and influence was weighed in more than the actual evidences she provided. She wrote, ‘ “The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence and sway of my ex husband.”

“It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke up could be publicly shamed and humiliated,” she said. “It sets back the idea that violence against women should be taken seriously.”

“I believe Johnny’s attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook the key issue of Freedom of Speech and ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in the U.K.,” Heard said. In 2020, Depp sued the Sun newspaper and its parent company in the U.K. after it published an article that called him a “wife beater,” BBC News reports.
