Charles Oliveira became the eleventh lightweight champion after his victory at UFC 262
Oliveira was simply unstoppable in the 19 seconds of the second round against Michael Chandler. The Brazilian went on a rampage, after almost being down and out in the first round.
It looked like Oliveira had no clue to the explosive power of Chandler. But he came back too strongly in the second round, plundering Chandler with a flurry of punches, before finishing him.
Oliveira is the lightweight champion now. He is undefeated in 9 fights. His last loss came way back in 2017.
However, Former UFC fighter and current analyst Chael Sonnen feels Oliveira might not be the champion for a long time. Sonnen pointed out the toughness of the lightweight division, before going on to say that it would be difficult for him to retain the belt.
Uncle Chael said:
“He’s probably not gonna be champion for long. Just probably not…Look at who’s there and look at who he’s gonna have to beat.”
Oliveira’s first title defense will be against the winner of the trilogy bout between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.
Chael Sonnen says Michael Chandler is just a win away from being in the title picture again
Chandler had his fair share of moments in his fight against Oliveira. In fact, he almost won the fight in the first round, after knocking down Oliveira. However, Oliveira held on and showed toughness.
Sonnen feels that Chandler might be just one win away from being in the lightweight title picture again, provided Oliveira isn’t the lightweight champion.
Sonnen was quoted as saying:
“I think in a very likely scenario, Chandler is just one away from being in the title frame, if the champion is no longer Oliveira.
The lightweight division is going to be absolutely bustling in the coming years.
