Conor McGregor wants the trilogy vs Dustin Poirier but it might not happen
Chael Sonnen also brought up the discussion regarding the Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier trilogy.
This is something that McGregor has spoken about and his coach also said the same. Poirier vs McGregor 3 could be for the title. However, The Diamond is already in the talks of a title shot and he has been a little vague in a rematch against McGregor for the third time.
Sonnen was speaking on his YouTube channel and brought up why Poirier wouldn’t mind facing the Irishman again.
“I don’t think he is against it. He beat Conor, why would he not want and do that again? I am going to assume in his largest payday ever.”
However, he hadn’t spoken to Poirier yet but he had another problem for the fight.
One issue that Sonnen brought up was McGregor fighting for the title despite losing. Khabib Nurmagomedov is unlikely to return and Poirier should be in line for a Lightweight title shot:
“The one and only problem I have in speaking to you guys about a trilogy or even predicting the trilogy.
“My problem is Dustin’s next fight’s gotta be for the belt. Which means if he is fighting Conor that has to be a title fight.
“That means Dustin, who has earned a title shot, against Conor who just got cleaned up prior to the title fight.”
Sonnen brought up his title fights from the past and said things like this can happen. The MMA legend lost to Anderson Silva for the Middleweight title and then lost to Jon Jones in his next fight for the Light Heavyweight title.
However, Sonnen claimed that McGregor would have to change his approach and become the fierce Irishman that tormented the UFC in the past.
McGregor took a more relaxed approach and had a ton of respect for Poirier before the fight. That wasn’t his usual self and well, he did get knocked out in the second round.
