Chael Sonnen praised the approach Islam Makhachev undertook against Drew Dober
Islam Makhachev beat Drew Dober at UFC 259 last weekend by an arm-triangle choke submission in round 3.
A lot of people thought that the Russian would take an aggressive approach in his fight. But that was not the case as he was more focused on displaying his wrestling abilities.
People were actually irate with Makhachev after the fight for not striking with Dober. But there was one person who absolutely loved it.
Chael Sonnen, the host of Beyond the Fight podcast on YouTube, said that he was loving the post-fight interview that Makhachev gave.
The former UFC fighter had a laugh and praised Makhachev’s choice of words in the interview.
“… a lot of people were put off by his post-fight interview. In his post-fight interview, he said ‘I could have struck with the guy, it would have been more exciting, but I took the easier road, just take him down, beat him up’, and I loved it. I loved that he admitted what he did. I loved that he called it the easier road.”

And Sonnen also mentioned how Makhachev showed by his approach that MMA is not just about excitement and made fans who think that way look foolish.
“I loved that he told all of you that think this is about excitement, shove it right up everybody’s a**, I thought it was fantastic.”
So what next for Makhachev? The Russian is 19-1 in his professional MMA career but you would think that he is yet to face an elite opponent.
And the #14 ranked lightweight fighter might finally be entering a phase where he goes against some of the top guys.
As Sonnen said in the interview above, 155 is by far the most competitive weight class in the promotion which is packed with stars at the top.
But if you are Makhachev, you would definitely be targeting someone in that top bracket to really make a charge for the top.
