Chael Sonnen wants Dustin Poirier to be ready and focused for the Conor McGregor trilogy fight
Conor McGregor is a walking goldmine. That is the reason why the Irishman managed to land a rematch against Dustin Poirier despite his brutal UFC 257 loss to the American.
‘The Diamond’ beat the Irishman via TKO in round 2 to take revenge of his UFC 178 loss in 2014 to the same opponent.
And now, the two frenemies are going to be inside the octagon against each other one more time. The date for the fight is yet to be revealed, but it is thought to be in the summer this year.
Poirier put on a masterful display of kicking and tactically wore down the former UFC ‘champ champ’. And this is something that Chael Sonnen wants Dustin Poirier to focus on.
The former UFC fighter was talking about the trilogy fight in the latest episode of his Beyond the Fight podcast on YouTube.
And he stated that Poirier should not be overconfident about the result already just because he won the last bout very recently. This is a mistake, Sonnen says, that many UFC fighters tend to make.
“If Dustin does what a lot of victors do, which is ‘everything is fine because we got the result. We got the desired outcome.’ If you do that, you make a mistake. You have to find the problems. And if you didn’t have any problems, then you have to find out what were his problems.”
Sonnen could not emphasize enough that Poirier needed to analyse his fight against McGregor instead of overlooking it.
He mentioned that the ‘physical outcome’ of a fight cannot be changed so quickly if the fight was to take place in May this year.
But the mindset of a fighter is; but that has to be ‘identified’. This is certainly a fight to look forward to and one which would definitely decide who gets a shot at gold.
