Conor McGregor might be keen on a Dustin Poirier trilogy but Chael Sonnen believes the Irishman doesn’t have a lot of fights left in him
Max Holloway vs Conor McGregor 2 might not happen anytime soon given how both stars are tied up in their respective divisions.
Holloway is set to fight for the title after Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega clash. McGregor, for his part, wants his trilogy with Dustin Poirier after a loss at UFC 257.
However, Holloway and McGregor are keen on a rematch after their earlier bout. That would be quite a fight against two of the best boxers in the UFC, but Chael Sonnen brought up just how many fights the Irishman has left in him.
McGregor is 32 and 27 MMA fights to his name. However, he fights once a year and that might affect his longevity in this sport.
Sonnen believed that McGregor only had a handful of fights and didn’t believe there would be more than five more in his career:
“I don’t believe Conor has a whole bunch of fights left.
“I would be stunned if from the moment you are hearing this word to the end of Conor’s career he has five, that would stun me.
“And I think you are closer to three than you are to five.”
Conor McGregor in another boxing match
Sonnen also brought up how McGregor was to fight Manny Pacquiao before this Poirier clash at UFC 257 took place.
Pacquiao is one of the best boxers in the world but Sonnen didn’t understand this clash. He claimed that doing a rematch against Floyd Mayweather was the way to go and the boxer would be keen on the clash too.
McGregor vs Mayweather was a huge boxing match that saw a lot of trash talking between the pair. In the end, it was McGregor who lost the clash but not before he made a ton of money.
Mayweather hasn’t been extremely active in recent years and missed out on the Forbes highest-paid athletes list.
This was something that McGregor brought up and it will be interesting to see if they clash in the future. As for Sonnen’s take, he could be right about McGregor having only a few more fights left.
The Irishman has achieved a lot in the MMA world and the only thing that might be missing now is to recapture a belt.
