Charles Oliveira broke a long-standing UFC record on his way to winning the lightweight championship
The UFC 262 main event was wild. After having dominated Charles Oliveira in the first round, Michael Chandler was looking to finish the fight off quickly in the second round.
But, ‘Iron Mike’s’ hunter instincts went for a toss, as he was caught flush by a powerful left hook by Oliveira. Chandler tried to get to safety after being knocked down, only to be finished by Do Bronx with a flurry of strikes.
The Brazilian thereby won the lightweight belt and eventually broke a long-standing UFC record that previously belonged to the ‘Count’ Michael Bisping. Oliveira became the fighter needing the most fights to win a UFC title, in the history of the promotion.
Oliveira needed 28 fights to become the champion, whereas Bisping became the champion at UFC 199 in his 26th fight.
Ariel Helwani of ESPN MMA pointed this out in a Tweet. He wrote:
“Oliveira has jumped into the crowd. He is over the moon. Oliveira breaks the record set by Michael Bisping at UFC 199 for most UFC fights needed to win UFC gold. Bisping needed 26. Oliveira breaks it at 28. And he’s only 31.”
Soon after Oliveira’s victory at UFC 262, fellow lightweight Islam Makhachev congratulated ‘Do Bronx’ on his success, while also making it loud and clear that he was coming for his title.
Makhachev for his part, has been undefeated in his last seven fights, with his last loss coming way back in 2015. He is currently ranked number 10, and has been steadily climbing the rungs of the lightweight ladder.
Makhachev tweeted:
“Congrats @CharlesDoBronxs keep that belt for me. See you soon.”
Makhachev is scheduled to face Thiago Moises on the 17th of July, later this year.
