Charles Oliveira spoke about the possibility of fighting Conor McGregor
Charles Oliveira is open to fighting ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor. The Brazilian, recently put on a brilliant showing at UFC 269. Coming into his first lightweight title defense, Oliveira saw off Dustin Poirier after getting off to a shaky start.
Even a year ago, things weren’t looking promising for Oliveira. The master submission specialist beat Tony Ferguson and suddenly found himself one step away from glory when Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement and vacated his belt.
Oliveira faced Michael Chandler at UFC 262 for the lightweight title and knocked him out in Round 2 to be crowned champion.
In the wake of this, Oliveira was asked about the possibility of fighting McGregor – an out-and-out money fight. With McGregor much lower in the rankings, the title picture hasn’t looked promising for the Irishman.
However, Oliveira didn’t play down the possibility of taking on ‘The Notorious.’ In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Oliveira said:
“If I had the chance [in the past] to fight for the belt or fight Conor, everybody knows I’d fight for the belt. That already happened, I’m the champion now. The champion has a name and his name is Charles Oliveira, Charles ‘do Bronx.’ If I had the chance to fight Conor for money today, I would. The belt is mine and continues being mine. We’ll continue building our legacy and making history.” [via BJPenn.com]
“Of course, no one’s a fool. ‘No, I’ll fight someone else because of the belt, leave Conor alone’ — who’s going to do that? Only a fool. If I had the opportunity to fight Conor, I would definitely fight Conor. The belt is mine regardless. The division has to get by and wait a little bit. There’s nothing else to do. We have to think about our families, our children, think about what we can do down the line.” [via BJPenn.com]
