Conor McGregor was left wondering who the twelfth lightweight champion would be after Charles Oliveira won the title at UFC 262
Oliveira knocked out Michael Chandler in the second round of their UFC 262 main event to clinch the vacant lightweight belt. A swift hard left hook from Oliveira sent Chandler running towards safety, after which the Brazilian finished him off with a flurry of strikes.
Oliveira thereby became the first Brazilian to win the lightweight title since Rafael Dos Anjos won it back in 2015. He also became the 11th UFC Lightweight champion in the history of the promotion.
Fellow lightweight Conor McGregor congratulated Oliveira on ‘becoming the 11th UFC lightweight champion’. He also left a message tweeting that he was wondering who the 12th champion would be.
At the post-fight presser Oliveira was asked about what his opinion was, on McGregor’s tweet and a possible fight with the ‘Notorious’ in Brazil.
Oliveira set the record straight saying McGregor must talk only after he gets past Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.
Oliveira said [via his translator]:
“Conor, since you’re so tough. First of all, you beat Dustin and then come over to Brazil, and I will put you on your a**…First he has to pass Dustin. He’s just one of those guys that talks a lot. He’s got to beat Dustin first.”
Charles Oliveira has been a part of the UFC since August 2010. And in the 11 years, this was the first time that he ever got a title shot.
Experimenting with weight classes early in his UFC career, didn’t seem to help the Brazilian. It was only after 2016, that he found his groove.
After a confidence-shattering loss to Paul Felder in later 2017, Oliveira turned things around in a grand fashion.
He went on an unbelievable 8-fight win streak, which gave him the opportunity to challenge for the title, and used it to perfection.
A well deserved championship indeed!
