Jason Witt earned a narrow majority decision win over Bryan Barberena in the main card of UFC Vegas 33
In a fight that could probably even earn the Fight of the Year award, Jason Witt earned one of the hardest-earned victories in recent times in the main card of UFC Vegas 33.
The fight began with Witt taking control in the first round. After a successful takedown, Witt began dominating Barberena while unleashing a few bombs. Barberena did have his moments, but was not that efficient.
Both the fighters came out swinging in the second round. But Witt had the slight edge in this round as well, as he landed the cleaner strikes.
The final round was one of the wildest rounds in the history of the UFC. Had it been a fight of more significance, it would be right up at the top in the list of best UFC rounds.
Witt and Barberena went hammer and tongs in this round. Witt got caught by a strong right from Barberena after shooting for a takedown which made him groggy. Witt then dropped Barberena. This process repeated until the end of the fight.
However, during the last 30 seconds, Barberena upped the ante. In fact he didn’t stop even when Witt bent down to pick his knocked-out mouthpiece.
Witt, coached by the tough-as-nails James Krause had the last laugh, earned a majority decision victory scoring 29-27, 29-28 in two judges’ scorecards.
Chris Weidman reacts to Jason Witt vs Bryan Barberena
UFC middleweight Chris Weidman was blown away by the insane battle between Witt and Barberena. Taking to Twitter, the former middleweight champion wrote, “Amazing fight!!”
Weidman, who suffered a nasty injury at UFC 261, has been recovering from the same. It looks like his broken leg would take a lot more time than expected, to recover.
