Claressa Shields tasted defeat for the first time in her MMA career on Wednesday
Claressa Shields recently suffered a split decision defeat against Abigail Montes. Shields was only fighting in her second MMA fight and the occasion proved to be a bit too much for the highly touted prospect. Her second MMA match was the PFL World Championship finale.
Shields went up against a former Olympic wrestler and that aspect proved to be the deciding factor in their fight as Montes was repeatedly able to take her down. Shields had made her MMA debut back in June against Brittney Elkin which se won. Before entering the world of MMA, she was a professional boxer with a record of 11-0.
Her lack of wrestling experience ended up being the factor that played the most crucial role in her fight against Montes.
The former UFC champion Cris Cyborg extended her support towards Shields after her loss. Cyborg herself tasted defeat very early on in he career and did not let that get to her and is now considered one of the best female fighters ever.
Cyborg took to Twitter to share a message for Shields where she said:
“Keep your head up @Claressashields I love how you are young and courages and not afraid to challenge yourself. The way you’re inspiring an entire generation of women to not be afraid of greatness is what makes you so powerful! @PFLMMA”
Cyborg had some really nice words for Shields and told her to keep her head up. Shields will certainly look forward to come back even stronger after her recent defeat.
