Colby Covington has welcomed the idea of a middleweight jump and reckons his style can cause problems to the middleweight champion Israel Adesanya
Colby Covington is keeping his decks open to the idea of a potential jump up in weight class and is confident that he can drown the middleweight reign of Israel Adesanya.
Colby Covington is set to face his former teammate and best friend Jorge Masvidal in an epic grudge fight. While the fight is full of venom and vehemence, what it does for the welterweight picture still remains a question. Both fighters have lost to the welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman twice, which makes their individual prospect of a third match highly unlikely.
“I’m not opposed to going up to 185 pounds and beating up ‘Stylebender,’” Covington told Yahoo Sports. “That guy, he’s not a well-rounded fighter. He can’t keep up with my pace. I know I can take him down and drown him. So there’s a lot of options out there for me. If I don’t get a chance to do my third fight with Usman, then it’s OK.”
It has become clear now that Covington is happy to move on if a third fight against Usman fails to materialize.
Colby Covington has built up his reputation and persona by bad-mouthing any and everyone. A reason behind his fallout with The American Top Team was also because he spoke ill about fighters inside the gym, including former UFC strawweight champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
Joanna is great friends with Masvidal and it’s not a surprise who she is rooting for at the UFC 272 main event.
Speaking to The Fighter vs The Writer, she said, “The worst thing about Colby, most of the things he said [and] said he’s done isn’t true. The way he was acting after he won the interim belt, like all the old man opening the door for him, him having a driver, these girls, these b*tches around him, walking to our American Top Team. It wasn’t true. Why are you acting like Conor McGregor [and then] saying bad things about Conor McGregor? There is only one Conor McGregor.
“So don’t call names on him and you’re trying to act like him. You have empty pockets, and you’re trying to act like a king. You can’t do these things. You can’t tell lies.”
