Alexander Gustafsson lost in his heavyweight debut but still had time to praise Khamzat Chimaev
Former Light Heavyweight title contender Alexander Gustafsson made his UFC Heavyweight debut at UFC on ESPN: Till vs Whittaker.
However, it didn’t go the Swede’s way despite facing an older Fabricio Werdum. Gustafsson was the slight favourite coming into this heavyweight debut but he was defeated in the first round itself.
Werdum locked in an armbar and Gustafsson had to tap out before additional damage took place. While Gustafsson was upset over the loss, he posted a positive message after the clash.
The 33-year-old posted the following on social media:
“It’s sucks to lose but I’m alive and healthy it’s a sport, a sport that I love! Thanks Werdum for a great fight and the @ufc for the opportunity!”
However, the Swede posted a shout out for another rising star in the UFC. Khamzat Chimaev picked up his second UFC win in a span of just 10 days.
The Swede is undefeated in his MMA career and Gustafsson posted a warning to the rest of the UFC too:
“Now let’s celebrate my brother and teammate kamza borz!!! He’s coming for everyone, be ready”
Creating history in the UFC
Chimaev created history in the UFC by winning two fights in different divisions in the shortest time. This was also the first time that someone had won two UFC fights in the span of 10 days.
Chimaev has a choice of fighting in either the Welterweight or the Middleweight divisions. He was upbeat for another fight in an hour’s time too and it will be interesting to see what is next for the 26-year-old.
Chimaev is called the Swedish Khabib Nurmagomedov due to his look and tenacity. He is undefeated, just like Khabib, but he has a long way to go before matching up to the Russian.
