Conor McGregor wants a rematch with Dustin Poirier despite devastating UFC 257 loss
Who ever said sequels can never be as good as the original? Well, if you’re talking about movies, then that’s mostly always the case.
But the rematch between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier of their 2014 bout was nothing short of classic. The seven-and-a-half minute fight had everything you could ask for.
The two earlier met more than 6 years ago at UFC 178. That bout was won by the Notorious One in emphatic fashion. However, this isn’t 2014 anymore.
The Diamond has come a long way. His technique, boxing, and footwork is now on an elite level. And all of it was on display last weekend. He wore McGregor down with brutal calf kicks in the first round.
Poirier resisted the urge to engage in an all-out war with the Irishman, which is what he would have wanted. His patience paid off and he delivered a series of quick blows in the middle of round 2.
Once McGregor’s legs wobbled, you knew it was game over. The two fighters famously paid heir respect to each other in the post-fight interview.
The loser of the bout now wants one more bite at the cherry. It is perhaps fair to him to some extent, but it would not make a lot of sense to the American.
Nevertheless, McGregor posted a photo of himself on his yacht the day after the fight. He is seen comforting his injured leg and the photo is captioned with intent to get a rematch with the Diamond.
This is one match the fans would never say no to. But Poirier just might. The American would now feel his next fight should be for the lightweight title.
Whether it’s against the returning Khabib Nurmagomedov, or one of Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira, Poirier deserves a legitimate shot at the belt.
