Ireland’s Kellie Harrington won the Gold medal in women’s lightweight boxing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
A marauding Kellie Harrington struck gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The 31-year old Dublin-based woman defeated Beatriz Ferreira of Brazil in the finals, 5-0 to do her nation proud.
A total of 20 boxers from 20 nations participated in the women’s lightweight division.
Barring the semi-finals, Harrington didn’t have much trouble seeing off her opponents.
In the round of 16, she took on Rebecca Nicoli of Italy and blanked her 5-0. She did the same against Imane Khelif of Algeria, in the Quarter-finals as well.
The semi-final was a bit closely contested, with Harrington winning the contest 3-2 against Sudaporn Seesondee of Thailand.
And in the finals, she handed yet another drubbing, this time to Brazil’s Ferreira.
Conor McGregor reacts to Kelly Harrington’s victory
Irish MMA superstar Conor McGregor was pleased with Irishwoman, Kelly Harrington’s victory at the Olympic games.
Taking to Twitter, McGregor lauded her achievement, while acknowledging her work ethic.
His tweet read:
“God bless you Kelly Harrington. What a journey! In the background then emerged forward, and then went and done absolutely everything you said you where going to do. Olympic Gold medal champion! The condition you are in is incredible. Real work ethic. Congratulations Kelly!”
The last time Ireland won the Gold medal in the women’s boxing lightweight division, it was a certain Katie Taylor at the 2012 London Olympics.
Taylor is currently a pro boxer, and has 18 wins and 0 loses to her name.
