Dustin Poirier lost to Charles Oliveira in the main event of UFC 269
Dustin Poirier’s quest to capture lightweight gold ended in disappointment after he succumbed to the holistic Charles Oliveira in the main event of UFC 269.
Poirier did enjoy a good start to the fight. He caught and stung Oliveira with a number of head strikes in the first round. He was ahead on the judges’ scorecards before Oliveira came back much stronger in the second round (A near 10-8 round).
Oliveira upped the pace in the third round as well. ‘Do Bronx’ submitted Poirier with a standing rear-naked choke to defend his lightweight belt for the first time.
Elsewhere, Nate Diaz wasn’t particularly happy with Poirier’s performance. He also hit out at his old rival Conor McGregor, allegedly miffed at how McGregor let Poirier beat him twice.
Diaz wrote:
“How Conor let Dp fuck him up hella times he sucks?”
McGregor replied calling Diaz a “lanky string of piss:”
“You lanky string of piss he got lumped around and got lucky twice. That’s it. Is what it is. Embarrassing night for him alright. That closed guard game. Wtf was that. Wow! Shocking. All good happy Sat night horse yupya it’s proper twelve day tomorrow 12/12. New Paddy’s Day!”
Poirier let Oliveira control him for the whole second round – something not common in ‘The Diamond’s fights.
Conor McGregor followed it up with another Tweet. He called Nate Diaz and Dustin Poirier runner up champs:
McGregor tweeted:
“Hella times ahhahahaa it’s hella times in the black forge inn tomorrow for proper twelve day bro. Full of it. Sauce Money. Power. Runner up champ yous two are at least yous can say you made championship weight before on the scales at least that’s something hahaha.”
