Conor McGregor blames it on stress fracture for his loss against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264
Conor McGregor’s ankle gave way at UFC 264 at the end of the first round against Dustin Poirier. After a check from the officials, the fight was awarded to Poirier via. TKO due to a doctor stoppage.
A distraught McGregor uttered many an angry word at the post-fight interview, even as Poirier and his wife Jolie looked on.
McGregor was operated on, the next day, and has now been released from the hospital. Following his release, he made his second virtual appearance (first one from the hospital), as he made a few claims about being injured even before the fight.
In the latest Instagram Live video, McGregor stated that he had multiple stress fractures in his leg even before the fight. He also claimed that his ankle had been causing problems for quite a long time.
McGregor said:
“I had stress fractures in my leg going into that cage. It was debated about pulling the thing out…I had multiple stress fractures in the shin bone, above the ankle. And I had troubles with the ankle anyway, throughout the years of fighting all the time.”
Dana White reveals that Conor McGregor would be back in a year
UFC President Dana White provided an update on when McGregor would return to action. The bossman stated that he had been released from the hospital and might probably be back in a year.
White told TMZ Sports:
“I think they just released him right now from the hospital…He will be in LA, for a little while. I don’t know if he’s gonna fly home or what he is gonna do from there…He will be back in a year.”
McGregor was also handed a six-month medical suspension following his injury to Poirier. He was handed the same when he was knocked out by Poirier in January, at UFC 257.
