Ex-UFC star Kenny Florian believes Conor McGregor and Jorge Masvidal could come to an agreement and fight a potential blockbuster bout at catchweight in the near future
Two of the biggest stars in the UFC industry are tipped to meet in the Octagon for what could be a stellar showdown. Jorge Masvidal vs Conor McGregor is what the UFC fans want as the two MMA superstars have the charisma to sell the most number of PPVs. This is according to former UFC star Kenny Florian.
However, the issue lies in deciding at what weight the fight should take place. Masvidal recently suffered a defeat via a unanimous decision against Colby Covington at UFC 272. ‘Gamebred’ fought at his usual 170lb welterweight category.
On the other hand, McGregor last fought at 155 pounds against Dustin Poirier last year. It was the third fight between the paid and the ‘Notorious’ lost via TKO after a doctor stoppage. McGregor broke his ankle during the fight and has been on the mend ever since.
The two are arguably the biggest stars in the UFC right now. And a fight between them could be one for the ages. However, Masvidal’s agenda Malki Kawa has claimed that his client was simply ‘too big’ for McGregor.
Why McGregor and Masvidal should fight at catchweight?
While recently speaking to UFC commentator Jon Anik on the Anik & Florian Podcast, Kenny Florian admitted that Masvidal and McGregor were the most deserving of such a lucrative opportunity to make the UFC proud once again.
It would also be a fight opportunity to bring in the most PPVs but it would need to be done at catchweight. He said, “I mean, who’s bringing in more pay-per-view buys than these guys (McGregor and Masvidal) right now? Not many. So I think that would be a fascinating fight. Perhaps they make it at catchweight. If there are two fighters that would be deserving of the catchweight, it would be those guys. Why not?”
While McGregor vs Masvidal does seem like a potentially fascinating encounter, the UFC will have to take into account that the two fighters may need some more time to recover from their previous fights.
