“170lb weight division is nice for me” – Conor McGregor aims to return to the welterweight division

Conor McGregor has fought three times previously in the welterweight division

Conor McGregor has been recuperating from his ankle injury. The Irishman had his left ankle snapped during his trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. It in turn resulted in a TKO (due to a doctor stoppage) loss for him.

McGregor was also handed a six-month medical suspension. He will be back in the second week of January.

More recently, McGregor has hinted that he might be returning to the welterweight division.

McGregor will be out of action for months

In a recent post he shared on Instagram, the Irishman mentioned how good he looked on the scale back during the UFC 246 ceremonial weigh-ins (vs Donald Cerrone – welterweight bout).

He also ruminated about how 180lbs would look on his, going on to referencing the $180 million he made in 2020, which made him the richest athlete in the world.

Conor McGregor made his welterweight debut in 2016

Conor McGregor made his welterweight debut in March 2016 – a fight that handed him his first-ever UFC defeat. It was against Nate Diaz, and the ‘West Coast Gangster’ submitted McGregor in the second round.

However, McGregor exacted revenge over Diaz, a couple of months later, albeit only via. a majority decision.

Since then, he has fought in the welterweight division, only once -against Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 which he ultimately won in the very first round.
