Who could Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor fight next?
Ever since their UFC 257 bout in January, fans and followers of the sport have wondered who Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier could take on in their next fight.
Many possibilities have risen, and UFC star Dan Hooker shared his thoughts on the issue. The New Zealander was speaking to ESPN MMA this week and was asked who he would want the American and the Irishman to fight next.
‘Hangman’ states the trilogy fight between ‘The Diamond’ and ‘The Notorious One’ will happen. His comments are consistent with the developments elsewhere.
Both fighters as well as Dana White has spoken about the fight happening sometime soon in the future, with Tyron Woodley even saying it should be for the belt.
“I think that fight will happen.”
Short and sweet, just how we like our answers to be.
Hooker also didn’t want to bring up the future of his Lightweight rivals, and avoided setting up other matches.
What are the chances of Dustin Poirier taking on Conor McGregor in his next fight?
Pretty high. McGregor clearly stated he wanted the rematch as soon as UFC 257 concluded. Poirier shortly replied by saying that the fight would happen.
And Dana White came out and said that the Irishman was ‘obsessed’ with making the trilogy happen. The two have, of course, met twice in the past.
Before the UFC 257 meeting, both of them squared off at UFC 178 in 2014, more than 6 and a half years ago.
McGregor won then, so this trilogy would also serve as a nice little tie-breaker. As unfair as it could turn out to be, the fight looks like it will go ahead.
The word ‘unfair’ is used here if the fight becomes a title fight. McGregor did very little to warrant a rematch, and Charles Oliveira is someone who is way more deserving of a shot at the belt at the moment.
