Dana White hints towards a possible date for Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor 3
Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier are all set to take on each other in a trilogy fight later this year. It has been building since the moment UFC 257 concluded.
The main event then ended in a round 2 TKO win for ‘The Diamond’. But if anyone knows McGregor, they would know he’d push for a rematch.
That’s what he did, and that’s what he got. Dana White was talking to the presser before UFC 260 earlier this week and stated that a trilogy fight is just a step away from being confirmed.
He warned Poirier to take the fight because it will be the ‘smart thing to do’ as others who haven’t, have lived to regret it.
As ominous as that sounds, White is quite right. A win here would surely mean a title fight for Poirier, and of course, the pay-cheque will be nothing like he has had ever had before.
He was then asked if July is a good date for the trilogy fight to take place. And he surprisingly responded with a confident yes.
The UFC president believes that July is in the ‘ballpark’ and it makes sense for the fight to take place in the summer.
“Yeah. Could be July. July makes sense. In that ballpark.”
That would give the two a little more than 3 months to prepare for the fight. The 2nd fight just happened in end-January this year.
And Chael Sonnen pointed out that while the physical outcome of fights does not change so quickly, the mental aspects can, which is something both of them would have to be careful about.
Poirier was dominant with his leg-kicks at UFC 257 but if the Irishman figures a way out of it, he could well be on his way to reclaim the title at 155 lbs.
