Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz are tied at 1-1 in their rivalry
UFC President Dana White recently appeared on TMZ ahead of the big UFC 272 event. While a lot of eyeballs will be on Jorge Masvidal vs Colby Covington, White was asked about another big star.
Conor McGregor has not fought since breaking his leg at UFC 264. Dustin Poirier was able to defeat McGregor for the second time in a row. However, the Irishman has posted several updates in recent months regarding a potential return.
White was asked about Nate Diaz taking on Poirier. While the president claimed that this fight was in the making, he was quick to suggest that a trilogy between McGregor and Diaz could not be ruled out.
“I wouldn’t count out a Conor-Nate 3… Listen, I’d be shocked if that fight didn’t happen again.”
White then also spoke about the potential return date for McGregor. While it would not be in the summer, the UFC president hoped that the Irishman could be back by fall.
“He’s chomping at the bit to come back. Realistically, when you look at everything that he’s got going on right now with coming back, and other things that need to be done to get ready to prepare again, it’s probably early fall.”
McGregor vs Diaz 3 would be an absolute barnstormer given the rivalry between the pair. However, there are a few hurdles the UFC must overcome to set up this clash.
Diaz has only one fight left on his current contract and there has been no confirmation of a new deal. The Diaz vs Poirier fight would then be the final one for the Stockton star.
McGregor, for his part, has spoken about possibly fighting for the UFC Lightweight title on his return. The Irishman might not be ranked highly in the division, however, he can basically ask for anything and the UFC would grant it to him.
Any McGregor fight is a huge deal for the UFC, and the Irishman can call the shots.
