Jon Jones vacated his UFC Light Heavyweight title after failing to secure one fight
Daniel Cormier is in the midst of a battle to reclaim the UFC Heavyweight title, however, he shed light on Jon Jones and his recent decision.
Jones decided to vacate his UFC Light Heavyweight crown. This was done as a fight against Francis Ngannou wasn’t being set up.
Jones even hit out at Dana White, and Cormier was asked if Jones was serious about leaving the UFC. DC was speaking on Ariel Helwani’s MMA show and backed his rival:
“This is what I think. It is so crazy, I believe that he is so serious in walking away because in all of those times he was suspended and gone, he kinda learned to live without that belt.
“For a long time he held the belt, when he beat me for the first time it was so long, that when he lost that belt, he probably thought his world was ending.
“Then he was gone for two years and life probably didn’t seem all that different, so he is probably looking at life right now and understanding that if I walk away from this belt, is my life really going to change that much? I think that gives him comfort, and being able to say things he is saying.
“I do believe he is serious.”
Cormier backs Jones
Jones and Cormier have met in the past, and Helwani also asked if DC was biased when speaking about the Light Heavyweight star.
DC is a regular commentator on UFC shows, but the former Heavyweight Champion added that he would praise Jones if he did the right things.
Jones made the right noises by coming to the streets and stopping violent protests from taking place regarding the murder of George Floyd.
The UFC legend took away spray cans from youngsters who might have vandalised stores. DC applauded Jones for this effort. However, DC also said he would criticise Jones if he didn’t agree with some of Bones’ actions.
Jones is one of the biggest stars in the UFC and him leaving the promotion would be a huge blow. He might be willing to leave the UFC belt now. However, that could open the door for a move to another promotion too.
Jones has more or less defeated everyone in his division. However, the fight against Ngannou was to be in the Heavyweight one.
The Light Heavyweight champion wanted to be paid a hefty sum for fighting in the higher division. However, the UFC could not meet his expectations and the clash was called off.
