UFC Commentator Daniel Cormier thinks Tony Ferguson needs to take a step down

Ferguson succumbed to his third-straight loss at the hands of Beneil Dariush, in the co-main event of UFC 262.

‘El Cucuy’ had no clue to the Iranian’s ground game, as he was mauled on the ground for the entirety of the fight.

This is the first time Ferguson has ever been on a three-fight skid. Plus, he didn’t go down fighting to his last three opponents, he looked like a fish out of water against them.

Former UFC Heavyweight champion and current UFC commentator, Daniel Cormier addressed this in the latest episode of the DC & Helwani Show. DC claimed that Ferguson was done as a top-level fighter, before going on to reveal an insane stat.

Ferguson had just 34 strikes in his last 34 minutes inside the octagon. That is something ridiculous coming from an elite striker like Ferguson, which clearly points out that he is waning.

Cormier told Helwani:

“Tony Ferguson as a top-level mixed martial artist is done I believe. I saw a crazy stat that was mentioned to Dana White at the post-fight press conference. Tony has now landed [just] 34 strikes in the last 34 minutes, that he is been inside the octagon. That is almost a strike a minute. He is not only losing, but he is also getting dominated…I think Tony needs to take a step back.”

Tony Ferguson dismisses talks of retirement after loss at UFC 262

The aftermath of UFC 262, had a lot, worried about Tony Ferguson’s future. But he posted a message on Twitter saying that he was not done.

Ferguson is known for his warrior mentality. But being 37 and clearly having your back against the wall, and still claiming that “We’ve only just begun”, is classic ‘Tony’.

Ferguson wrote:

“It Ain’t Over Yet Mcgavin’, The Way I See It … We’ve Only Just Begun.” -Happy Gilmore. Retire & Give These MF’s A Break!? No, Not On My Watch. Now I’m Pissed. CSO-Thank you Hardcore For Picking Me Up When I Was Down- Champ #FindingMyHappyPlace #GoldJacket.”

It looks like it is time for ‘El Cucuy’ to pick on slightly lower-ranked opponents. Fighting against Dan Hooker or Paul Felder might probably test his ‘new and updated mettle’.
