Jon Jones wants to fight Francis Ngannou next but negotiations haven’t gone too well
Daniel Cormier weighed in on the debate regarding the next fight for Jon Jones and his payday. The former Heavyweight champion was speaking to Ariel Helwani and discussed Jones facing off against Francis Ngannou.
One problem with the clash is Ngannou is also a heavyweight and Jones would have to move up a division.
Cormier suggested that moving up a division means more pay, and that is the problem point for Jones. The current Light Heavyweight champion has been critical of the UFC not wanting to pay him a huge amount.
Ngannou also has been a vocal critic of the UFC not doing their bit, but Cormier wanted more clarity on all this.
He claimed that a star could not ask for crazy money based on what they are getting paid. However, he did reveal how much the UFC could be willing to pay Jones:
“I would make it public. I’d make it all public.
“I’d put Francis’ purse out, Jones’ purse out from [Dominick] Reyes and then I would put what they ask for. Now, we’re talking transparency right because right now, we are getting only one side of story.”
Cormier also said that the UFC could be willing to pay multi-millions to Jones but he wasn’t sure about the $20million mark that he used in the interview:
“I am almost certain the UFC will give him $7m-$8m, I don’t think for a second they wouldn’t.”
Heavyweight madness
Another problem with the Heavyweight division is that Ngannou wants to fight Stipe Miocic for the title.
However, the champion is a first responder and a firefighter. He has been doing his bit during the coronavirus pandemic but is expected to fight Cormier next.
Jones moving up to the heavyweight division would make things difficult for the UFC bosses too. Should he defeat Ngannou, Jones might want a title shot and lead to more match-making issues.
