Brian Ortega vs Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 266 will be on course for ‘The Fight of the Year’
UFC 266 lived up to its expectations. In fact, it exceeded all expectations. Thanks to Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega.
The two featherweight behemoths put on a fight for the ages, and what is regarded by many as the greatest featherweight fight of all time.
Both the fighters got off to a brilliant start in the first round. However, it was the champ, Volkanovski, who began upping the ante as the rounds progressed.
The third round, provided one of the greatest spectacles witnessed in modern MMA history. Ortega, a well-known jiu-jitsu black belt holder, threw everything into the fight, kitchen sink included.
He almost submitted Volkanovski with a guillotine. ‘The Great’ who looked like he was about to tap, somehow wriggled through.
However, he was soon caught with a triangle from Ortega. Another spectacular ‘Houdini’ act followed.
After recovering, Volkanovski grounded and pounded Ortega as though nothing had happened.
That was when Volkanovski gained the upper hand. From there, he looked the stronger man.
But, ‘T-City’ never gave up. He caught Volk with another submission hold in the fourth round too, only for the Aussie to escape yet again.
In the end, Volkanovski emerged victorious, thereby successfully defending his featherweight title.
Shattered orbital bones – don’t care. Almost blinded – don’t care. Bloodied face and nose- don’t care. Ortega lost the match, but won the hearts of everyone inside the T-Mobile Arena.
UFC’s number one ranked lightweight contender Dustin Poirier was in awe of what he had witnessed.
Congratulating both the fighters, Poirier hailed Brian Ortega for the heart of a champion he showed.
Poirier’s Tweet read:
“He might not be leaving with the belt but Ortega showed a champions heart tonight. Congratulations to both guys on a great fight!”
