Dustin Poirier faced Conor McGregor at UFC 178
Former Interim UFC Lightweight Champion Dustin Poirier is ready to return to the Octagon.
The 31-year-old has not fought since his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242. The American fought for the undisputed Lightweight title, however, it was Khabib who came out on top.
Surprisingly, he hasn’t been in the Octagon since the 2019 loss but is willing to take on a rival. Poirier participates in several Q+A sessions on Twitter and was asked about a fan on his next fight.
The American was asked if Conor McGregor could be his next fight, and Poirier threw the ball into the Irishman’s court:
Poirier faced McGregor at UFC 178 in 2014. However, the American lost to McGregor via TKO but was on a charge since that.
He beat stars such as Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis, but can’t seem to get a fight anymore.
Another fan tweeted that he was missing Poirier in the Octagon, but the former champion suggested that he was trying to get into a fight.
Things have been difficult for UFC stars over the past month as many fights have been cancelled or postponed. However, Dana White has confirmed that three UFC events will take place in the span of a week after UFC 249.
That takes place on 8 May with two other events on 13 and 16 May respectively. Poirier isn’t on any of those cards, but he has another big problem.
The Lightweight division is stacked with several top performers. Tony Ferguson is another one, and he faces Gaethje at UFC 249 for the Interim Lightweight crown.
The main event for UFC 249 was Khabib vs Ferguson. However, Khabib can’t make it as he is stuck in Russia.
Gaethje vs Ferguson is the replacement fight, and it will be interesting to see how that goes.
