Dustin Poirier resoundingly defeated Conor McGregor but there are talks of a trilogy between them
The dust is finally settling after an incredible UFC 257 which saw Dustin Poirier defeat Conor McGregor.
This was the main event of the card and The Diamond proved he is ready for another title shot. McGregor was resoundingly defeated in the second round but the UFC seems keen on doing a third fight.
The pair are 1-1 after the two fights and McGregor has also brought up a third fight with Poirier. The Diamond was speaking to Bruce Buffer on the “It’s Time” podcast and believed that the UFC wanted to set this up too:
“I think they are going to do a Conor trilogy. That’s what I think.”
Poirier was told that the UFC might want to do it in the next two or three months and the Diamond understood why this fight made sense:
“Yeah, I know Conor’s team were pushing for it to be sooner than later and I mean we both have a knockout over each other, so it’s only right to do it again.
“But at the same time, I am in the No.1 position in the division and there are a lot of contenders, so I don’t know what the UFC is going to do.”
Apart from the results, UFC 257 was trending a lot and a third fight would be a blockbuster in terms of PPV sales.
Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier for the UFC Lightweight title in trilogy clash?
McGregor vs Poirier could be set up for Khabib Nurmagomedov’s UFC Lightweight title. While this would be a huge clash, Poirier claimed the third fight would actually take away something from his most recent win:
“It is tough to say, man. You know the way the UFC works. They do what they want, I have no clue.
“To me, I feel like, if we do the same exact fight again, it will be the third time so we are 1-1 all that stuff.
“I fell like if that’s the case they just, we took an opportunity away from me. We went out there on a huge night, PPV main event across the world and I did what everyone though I wasn’t going to do.
“I feel like I should have been awarded championship status right there, you know.”
However, Poirier wasn’t worried about the future. He believed these were exciting times ahead for him and already calls himself the uncrowned champion.
Whatever happens, Poirier should be fighting for the title in his next fight. It is to be seen who he ends up facing, but the Diamond looks great for possibly getting some gold around his waist.
