Dustin Poirier put on a show at UFC 257 but he doesn’t seem to be in love with fighting
Dustin Poirier defeating Conor McGregor was one of the shocks of 2021. The UFC campaign might only be a month into 2021 but not many expected Poirier to get the better of his rival.
McGregor was talking the talk before the fight. However, Poirier put on quite a show and devastated his rival with some calf kicks before knocking him out.
The Diamond was speaking on the “It’s Time” podcast held by Bruce Buffer. He was asked about one comment made after the win over McGregor.
Poirier seemed to tell former UFC Champion Daniel Cormier that he wasn’t in love with fighting. The Diamond expanded on those comments and claimed he wasn’t all that excited about some other aspects of the game:
“I am just, honestly, in a place in my life where the only thing I love about fighting is the fight itself.
“Just years and years of watching this game and watching the way the fans are and watching the way the media is and watching the way a lot of fighters are, it is just a turn-off to me, man.
“I am not in love with it like I used to be.”
Poirier added that he still loved the fight but not all that went around with it:
“I love fighting, I don’t love the fashion show of everything else.”
The 32-year-old also opened up on his plans and wasn’t thinking of retiring soon. Buffer and his co-host, TJ De Santis, brought up that he could have two or three fights left in him, but the Diamond wasn’t thinking all that much into the future.
Poirier claimed he was just taking the fights as it came but wanted to fight the “real” ones. He was “all ears” as to what the UFC had in mind for his next fight too.
He was still waiting for them to confirm his next plan of action but the Diamond seems ready for any challenge in the Lightweight division.
Poirier wants to be the champion and in this form, there aren’t many who can keep up with the shining Diamond.
