Dustin Poirier was trapped in a guillotine against Conor McGregor at UFC 264
UFC star Dustin Poirier spoke about how he managed to get out of the guillotine used by Conor McGregor during their trilogy fight on Saturday night.
McGregor seemed to have Poirier in tight during the first round, but The Diamond was able to break out of the hold. However, it all could have gone quite poorly for Poirier as he spoke with Megan Olivi after his win.
Poirier spoke after the match to ESPN MMA, saying:
“For a second there I was like, ‘Oh s—! I might’ve played myself.'”
He added that he did not feel that McGregor would get him to tap out and was confident in himself. The eagerly-anticipated fight did not finish as predicted, as McGregor’s injury put an end to things.
The American is now waiting for his title opportunity against Charles Oliviera. Poirier discussed his future in UFC, saying:
“I feel like I’m coming into my own because I care less about all the noise around me surrounding fighting.”
McGregor has just one win in the last four-and-a-half years. Poirier now has eight victories and one defeat since 2016. The ‘Diamond’ has established himself as the No 1 lightweight contender in the UFC.
Poirier improved to 28-6 in his all-time record. He has impressed in both duels against the Irishman and looks set to move towards the Championship scene in the next few months.
Charles Oliviera is the current UFC lightweight champion. He made a prediction to see McGregor finish off Poirier, but it did not go as planned.
“I’m the champion. For me, it’s the same, McGregor or Poirier. It’s the same,” said Oliviera. He is set to face Poirier in the next few months, which will be decided by UFC President Dana White.
After the fight, Oliviera said:
“It is sad. We don’t ever want to see a guy lose like that but it happens so congratulations to Dustin (Poirier). This is MMA it is unpredictable. We never know what is going to happen.”
Oliviera holds multiple UFC records, including the most submission wins in UFC history at 14, and for most finishes at 17, Charles Oliveira beat Michael Chandler in Round 2 to win the UFC lightweight title at UFC 262 after a long wait.
