Dustin Poirier outclassed Conor McGregor at UFC 257 with an impressive TKO win
It was Dustin Poirier who prevailed against Conor McGregor in one of the biggest lightweight fights in recent UFC history. There was not much to separate between the two fighters before the bout.
However, when the bell rang, it was clear who was the superior one inside the octagon. The Irishman tried to lurk Diamond into an all-out war with his quick punches, but Poirier remained focused and didn’t give in.
Instead, the American went to work on the Notorious One’s calves. One calf kick after the other meant that McGregor was jaded in the second round.
This is also what helped Poirier set up his flurry of punches in the middle of round 2 to win the fight. McGregor’s legs wobbled after a clean punch to his face, and it was over once he hit the ground.
Dustin Poirier likely to have a shot at gold after UFC 257 win against Conor McGregor
And now, Diamond, who is a former interim UFC lightweight champion, has a new name for himself. Surely on a high after such a massive win, he took to his Twitter account on Monday to declare: “I am the champion”.
He followed it up with: “UNCROWNED WORLD CHAMPION”. This name, however, may not stay for too long as he is touted to have a shot at the lightweight belt.
If Khabib Nurmagomedov stays retired, Poirier, who was ranked as the #2 lightweight in UFC before his fight against McGregor, could go up against Michael Chandler or Charles Oliveira for the gold.
It was stated that Khabib could be back depending on the outcome of UFC 257, but that is seeming more like a marketing gimmick than an actual statement. Either way, Poirier has taken one step closer to be the new champion.
