Dustin Poirier backed out of a fight against Tony Ferguson after failing to agree on terms

The mega clash between Dustin Poirier and Tony Ferguson was taken down as the UFC couldn’t agree on terms with the Diamond.

That would come as a blow as Poirier had looked good after beating Dan Hooker. There have been calls that the UFC weren’t willing to pay the former Interim UFC Lightweight champion the right kind of money, and even Poirier highlighted that.

However, Dana White was speaking after the recent contender series and was asked about the fight. Ferguson had asked White to “pay” Poirier but White confirmed that El Cucuy will accept another fighter than The Diamond.

White was further pressed why Poirier didn’t want to fight and he claimed that negotiating was one way to turn down a fight.

Poirier wasn’t impressed with these comments and hit back at the UFC president:

Poirier standing his ground

While White didn’t confirm that it was all about the money, Poirier has made it clear that he wants to be compensated well.

The UFC has had problems with their fight money for stars. That led to Jorge Masvidal and Jon Jones calling out the promotion.

It also hurts the UFC’s image when a rival backs Poirier’s claims of getting paid. The Diamond is one of the best there has been in the UFC and he is taking the right stand.

However, it is to be seen if he ever gets to fight Ferguson. White has confirmed that they have a replacement for Poirier and Ferguson will accept this clash.

It will be interesting to see what is next for Poirier too. He made a great return against Hooker and needs to continue winning if he ever wants a crack at that Lightweight title again.
